Tip 1:

Prevent crash of the Hard-Disk (SY HD1)

To whom hasn't this occurred!? You've been programming and saving more than enough, and then it happens: The TECHNICS Hard-Disk suddenly crashes!! 1000s of working hours are annihilated. So that this doesn't happen to you, here is the most important tip of all:

As long as the Hard-Disk is running in the background (it switches itself off only approx. 25 sec. after the last process), you should avoid starting the Hard-Disk again. If the automatic disconnection takes place at the same time as a restart there is an "instruction conflict" within the system. A crash of the Hard-Disk is the result!!

Therefore  my tip: Only do a new Song-search if the Hard-Disk has switched itself off !! That's the only way to be certain.

Tip 2:

How do I get a special Snare-Drum into MSP ?

For example: The Synth-Snare out of the Synth- Drum-Kit

1. adjust Bank 15 in the MSP
2. keep RECORD/STOP - key pressed and press PAD1 at the same time.
3. KEYBOARD PERC - key
4. PAGE - key
5. activate Synth-Kit
6. fasten the first "D" on the left of the keyboard - now the Synth-Snare should sound.
7. press the START/STOP-key -  the counter runs backwards:  -2 , -1 , 0 , 1 , 2 . . .
8. hold the "D"-keyboard-key with the Snare exactly at "zero" and immediately thereafter press the START/STOP - key.
9. press PAD1  =  the Synth-Snare will be there.
10. do not forget to save (see TECHNICS - instruction for use)!!
It should not have folded the first time with the "timing", you can repeat it as often as you like. In this manner all Drum-Sounds can be activated and saved at the 9 storage  placings.

Tip 3:

Take a look into the KN3000 treasure-box

With the help of the User-Drumkit you get the possibility of accessing an abundance of Drum-Sounds, which many people probably don't know at all. Especially for Synth-Snares the KN3000 has to offer:

1. KEYBOARD PERC - key
2. PAGE - key
3. activate User Kit
4. SOUND EDIT - key
5. press lowest "D" on the keyboard-manual and NOTE SELECT - key at the same time.
6. on the right above in the display you go on sound-search "up and down" (use the "D"-key).
7. if you've found your favorite sound, simply press the SOUND-EDIT-key and the sound is activated (test it with the "D"-key).
8. don't forget to save !!
All the KN3000 Drum-Sounds appear to lie on this lowest level. It's very interesting to search for Drum-Sounds there. The Sound-Material which the KN3000 has to offer is already enormous. The list seems to be almost endless. You only have to know how to get it!!

Tip 4:

Mixer - trap:

You know that probably also: You would like to change the volume of a certain instrument of a GM-Song, go to the mixer around the announced track determining, afterwards into the STEP-mode making over the modification and then you must determine: here is placed a different intrument at all. Notice: The Mixer shows exclusively the Part  (not the Track!!) Track and Part are correct however starting from the 10. Track no more. But the Part is also displayed in the STEP-mode (directly under the Track-designation with a thick "P" before it). But one will make the same mistake everytime once more.

So: in STEP-mode please only look for the Part !!!

Tip 5:

More printout strength to an instrument lend:

They process even to a GM-Song, with which a guitar is a substantial constituent of the Song? With a little Trick you lend more printout strength to the guitar (GM-Songs are often nevertheless quite thinly programmed): Copy the guitar-track nevertheless simply into a second free track. Set in each case in the clock 1 of this two tracks the "PAN = panorama" extremely opposite: into the first track  PAN = 0, in the otherone  PAN = 127.

The guitar rings out now on broad surface and substantially more printout-strongly. Quite different "Guitar-Feeling"!!

Tip 6:

Change GM-Songs into TECHNICS-mode:

There are 18 instruments, where are coming "octav-shifts" by changing GM-Songs into the TECHNICS-mode.

        TECHNICS                       GM   -  Name

  • Celesta  ( - )
  • Glockenspiel ( - )
  • Music Box ( - )
  • Xylophone ( - )
  • Tubular Bells ( - )
  • Full Drawbars ( - )           [Organ 1]
  • Jazz Organ ( - )              [Organ 2]
  • Bowed Bass ( + )           [Contrabass]
  • Bright Trombone ( + )      [Trombone]
  • Orch.Tuba ( + )               [Tuba]
  • Brass ( + )
  • Bassoon ( + )
  • Piccolo ( - )
  • Whistle ( - )
  • Bass & Lead ( + )
  • Tinkle Bell ( - )
  • Agogo ( + )
  • Wood Block ( - )

For this sounds there is a correction necessary. The bass in track 2 you have to shift 1 octave upwards generally.

Notice: In clamps you can see, what's the direction for shifting the instrument:

+    =    1 octave upwards

     -     =     1 octave downwards.

After that, the song runs absolutly error-free!!

Notice: On my diskette the sounds of correction are placed in the Sound-MEMORY, which you have to change for the original instrument.

Tip 7:

More Reverb for your MIDI-Files

You want to play your MIDI-File with more Reverb? So change the Reverb-Data and store it:

DIGITAL REVERB - key press (longer)
with  VALUE  change the reverb (norm is 70)
SEQUENCER - key
EDIT - key
PAGE - key
PANEL WRITE  - key
OK
do not store forgotten!
Now you have changed the RESET of your Song (test it with   FILL IN 1  - key).

Notice:  By this way you also can change and store the VOLUME of each Track of your Songs, which you have played by yourself!

Tip 8:

That's the  "Roland-Sound-Canvas"

I've compared all 128 GM-Sounds between TECHNICS KN3000 and SOUND-CANVAS.(The most Midifiles will be programed by the "Sound-Canvas"). Here is the result:

There are 6 instruments , which are playing very different. So you don't have to wonder, that some Midifiles are not playing very beautyful. Specially the wind instruments are playing very different.

For example: The AltoSax by Sound-Canvas is not the same as the AltoSax by KN3000, it's more playing  as the Breathy Tenor by KN3000. The Tuba by Sound-Canvas is more playing as the Closed Fr. Horn by the KN3000. The Trombone by Sound-Canvas is more playing as the Open Fr. Horn by the KN3000. . . and so on.

At first time, I have changed the instruments, I couldn't believe my ears: The Songs are running more in harmony as before (Even the programer has thought). You only have to find the way. . . .  :-)

For all, they want to hear the original Sounds by the KN3000, they have to change the next instruments (only for TECHNICS-mode):

             SOUND-CANVAS                                KN3000

Alto Sax Breathy Tenor
Tuba Closed Fr. Horn
Trombone Open Fr. Horn
Brass Synth Brass 2  (1 Octave >)
Accordeon Fr. Musette
Folk Guitar Jazz Ac. Guitar

Notice: The corrected  Sounds are always stored on my diskette in the  SOUND-MEMORY!!

Tip 9

You want to play your GM-Song in another "key"?
So you change for example your Song from "E" to "C"    (4 "half-steps" deeper):

1. SEQUENCER - key
2. EDIT - key
3. TRANSPOSE - key
4. TRACK     change  from  "1"  to  "ALL"
5. LAST-MEASURE - key /  value "200" adjust
6. TRANSPOSE - key /   value  "- 4"  adjust
7. OK - key
8. YES - key

The Song is playing now in "C".
But you don't have to change the drum-track (10).
So you have to transpose back this track:
(we are still in transpose-mode)

1. TRACK - key  /  value  "10"  adjust
2. TRANSPOSE - key /  value  "+ 4" adjust
3. OK - key
4. YES - key
5. SEQUENCER-PLAY -  key        ready.

Your GM-Song is running now 4 "half-steps" deeper and you can play to this Song in "C".

Tip 10

You want to add a new instrument for playing a  Song?

Put a new instrument into track 1 and save it with the correct volume:

Look for your favorite instrument you want to play
Adjust the right volume for track 1 (most  "127")
SEQUENCER - key
EDIT - key
PAGE - key
PANEL WRITE - key
OK - key
Don't forget to save!

Now everytime you'll have your favorite instrument with the correct volume for playing your GM-Song.

Tip 11

This isn't a very populary tip, but it's very important sometimes:  Make the keyboard-keys mute!!

1.  MIDI - key
2.  "octave shift & local on/off" - key
3.  local track 1 to  "off"  adjust
4.  SEQUENCER PLAY - key.

But every Song in GENERAL-MIDI-Mode you will load, you have to change like this.

You've a better position by TECHNICS-formated Songs. Here you can save the "mute-mode"! So the mute-mode is automatical present by loading the
Song.   :-)
